FYI on Heating Oil, Winter 2004-2005 Millions of American households and businesses, mostly in the Northeastern states, rely on heating oil to keep warm in winter. The price of distillate fuel oil (heating oil). like any other market commodity, is set by the forces of supply and demand, both for distillate and the crude oil from which it is refined. Looking ahead to the heating season, the U.S. Energy Information Administration says "weather patterns will drive the eventual outcome, but higher overall heating expenditures are likely."
